So today was a smaller version of Friday except the Cognetive testing went for a longer period if time. Jordan did really well and the chat we had with the psychologist proctoring the assessment said his current unofficial partial status is as follows.
- He has appropriate age and grade level knowledge.
- His processing & information retrieval speed is the main point of contention.
- Jordan's memories are there but the ability to retrieve them easily or quickly is where we need to work.
The point to take away from this is Jordan is doing really well each day with his progress, yet he has a long way to go. It's a combination of a couple things. The bruising on the brain still needs to heal. This healing is what can take up to a year or longer. Through this healing process is where the sub acute therapy comes in. Phoenix Children's Hospital is working their butts off, and Jordans for that matter, to get him ready for home. By home I mean our house. They don't want him being intitutionalized like he us currently.
Once he is back home the sub acute therapy will come from many sources. The main therapy will come from Mom, Dad & Tara. This foundation will be support the professionals. Those pro's are the whichever sub acute facility we choose, the CCSD Homebound program & Dell Webbs principal Naegle, School nurse Baker, counselor, teachers & his friends. Personally I think his friends will play a more vital and important role than one would think. Depending on where Jordan's progress is at the beginning of the year they may or may not see him at school. Imagine for a minute 20 people are all talking at you at the same time and you need to understand each conversation. This would be difficult for anyone. Now think of this, one person represents sight, one balance, another is judgement, and another breathing, one is hearing, the other is emotions. Fill the others with any voluntary or involuntary action your brain would need to process and you can see what he needs to cope with on his first day in school. I say all this to let you know how much more ground he needs to cover as well as how wonderful my conversation with the staff at Dell Webb middle school was last week. They will work directly with Jordan's therapists to gauge where he is and make sure he receives the required teaching in the best way for him to receive it. That could mean Jordan is home schooled for a year or possibly half year. It could mean taking his three core subjects first thing in the morning and leaving school to go to therapy. I was really worried about Jordan losing touch with his schooling. So I guess it's fair to say the even when he comes home the acute therapy will in theory continue even though it's not called acute.
So this was just an off the record update we were given until they are able to finish all the rest of the testing. There will be another test in roughly a years time that will give us a reevaluation of his state at that time. It could be 100%, 80% or some other number. If I had to give my current nonprofessional opinion of where he is now, I would have to place him as a whole somewhere between 50% & 60% of all the abilities Jordan had before the incident. I know this sounds harsh and it is, because I see the videos of his teammates and friends playing and that is the speed I'm hoping Jordan can return to. There is only one part of this puzzle we don't have control of and that is the injury itself and how well it heals. It's the molecular scars that are left that we can't control. This is why we pushed so hard for the Omega-3's. This was our attempt at trying to control some part of everything. Fingers crossed and many good vibes & prayers. When the healing has hit it's conclusion we will be able to say,
"We did everything we could".
Thank you to all of you for contributing to make that quote a reality.
