This is a story about two remarkably strong boys. You've been living the story of one of those boys and now you will hear the story of another. Jordan had his accident at 5:20 on Saturday May 17th. On Sunday May 18th we were shoulder deep in our own world of grief, disbelief and an unknown future. Hospital life was just taking ahold of us. The various beeps coming from the machines monitoring Jordan's blood preasure, pulse, intracranial preasure, cranial profusion rate, blood oxygen levels & respiration rates. The IV pumps constantly going off because meds had run out. The Respiratory matching and it's constant pushing & pulling of air within Jordan's lungs. There was only one other sound we took notice of during this foggy time for us. . . . The landing of the helicopters. Our room faced the landing pad for Flight for Life. You could hear them coming from about miles away. When they were on final approach their rotors would thump through the air just like in the movies. Then silence. Every time they would arrive we would understand that someone else was fighting for their lives. . . . This is a story about one of those flights. On Sunday May 18th an 11 year old boy was floating lifeless in lake mead. No one can see him from where they are sitting in the beach. The boys uncle walks to the shore to see where his boy is and finds him face down in the water. He yells for him "Misiel"!!!! And pulls him from the water in shear terror, screams for someone to call 911 and starts to perform CPR. Time seems to move in slow motion but the uncle continues CPR. He knows that at their remote distance it will take some time for any type if trained emergency responders to arrive, so he continues. 10 minutes go by. . . 20 minutes. . . 30 minutes. Just after the 60 minute mark, Flight for Life arrives. The flight medics relieve the utterly exhausted uncle. They quickly gather the Misiel up with uncle in tow and board the Flight for Life helicopter and are taken to the hospital in Kingman Arizona. Once there the doctors examine the boy but expect a poor outcome for him but decide anyway to transport him to Sunrise Children's Hospital. After a 30 minute flight they land. Misiel is placed on all possible life support equipment and is wheeled up to the ICU floor. This journey lands him 3 doors down from a young boy with a traumatic brain injury. One that he probably would have been friends with if the cercomstances if their lives were different. He lay in a coma for four days until finally awakening, once his vitals are stable his regiment of OT, PT and speach therapy starts. This continues for the coming weeks until one day he and his family get the good news that they will be going to Phoenix Children's Hospital. His uncle is overjoyed and as he is wheeled out he passes the room of the young boy with the TBI and notices he's not there. I hope he's ok, It would have been fun to play games with him. He looked like a cool guy. Oh well. His plane leaves on the 7th of June and arrives at Phoenix Children's Hospital soon after. He is taken to the inpatient rehabilitation ward room 103 and they start putting him through therapy sessions immediately. This is his new normal. While Misiel is going through his normal daily routines, other patients come and go. Most stay for only a few days but some stay longer. On the 11th there is quite the commotion over in room 105. All the therapists have gathered to assess a new patient. Misiel goes about his normal routine with his uncle, PT, OT & ST. As the days pass he continues with his routine until one Day when he is walking back from the PT room and notices a young boy about his own age emerge from room 105 using a blue walker to assist him down the hall. The therapist say hello to Misiel and introduce him to the boy they are helping. " Misiel, this is Jordan". They wave at each other. One of the tharapists says "Jordan came from Sunrise Children's Hospital just like you Misuel". Through the next couple of weeks they find each other in Therapy sessions at the same time, passing in the halls or in Kid Zone together. Both working extremely hard to get back to a fully functional new normal. One day the therapists agree that because of the boys hard work, they deserved a reward for their efforts. So they decided to take them on an excursion in a real social setting to test what they've learned. Peter Piper Pizza was the destination. All the detailed preparation was worked out and on Tuesday June 24th they went in their field trip. The excursion was a success and both had a great time. Both came back exhausted but with big smiles. This would be the last time they would see each other because the next day Misiel was released to go back home to Kingman Arizona to continue his therapy through an out-patient setting. Two boys who visited deaths doorstep in two entirely different ways found themselves on the same journey to recovery. Along with all the doctors, nurses & therapists who helped them along this journey I like to think that when it was the darkest for the boys, when they stood on deaths doorstep, they chose not to walk through that door and to return home. When they made that decision a Luck Dragon appeared for both of them and they rode them home laughing and smiling and laughing all the way. 🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯 It seems that our daily routine must be becoming quite familiar to you all so I shall try &just give whatever changes or updates may have occurred... OT 's decision to introduce the " glove" seems to have been a good one There's already more range of motion in " Lefty" & not quite as much wincing or hesitating from Jordan when asked to use it. Speech made some adjustments to Jordan's dietary protocol- to going off thickener in naturally thicker liquids such as Boost ( protein/ calorie rich shake) & milk & down to 1-4 ratio with things such as juice, Gatorade & water. Tomorrow we shall try cereal for first time ..., Rice Krispies were Jordan's choice with an English muffin & a banana! Yum. PT took Jordan for a warm up walk up & down two full flights of stairs & then into the gym to test his balance on a Wii wobble board , playing games that challenged his side to side & back & forth motion. Finished up too late too get into school today but after a nap & some dinner finished up with a FaceTime session with Dad & Tara.. Almost forgot , took all meds today INCLUDING omega 3 fish oil orally ... Chased down by some chocolate pudding- everything really is better with chocolate!!😃😃 one step closer to Jordan not requiring his stomach tube. So close I can barely stand it but patience must be maintained for now & so I shall force myself. 11:11 ... As good a time as any to sign off for tonight . I shall be back same time ( ish!!) tomorrow night. Til then do a little Happy Dance kiss & hug your loved ones & dream sweet dreams With Annaka( child life services) , Liza ( OT) & Nicole ( speech therapist)... Part of the AMAZING rehab team here at Phoenix Children's!! 🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯 A short report for rehab side of things today as there was a Field Trip to be experienced!!! But firstly, let me brag a little on Jordan & let you know that every day his morning routine of showering & dressing is getting faster & faster & the beat pert is , he is doing more & more of it . Today he got his briefs & shorts on all by himself & 90% of his tshirt. Shows are also coming along nicely although laces are a little more tricky. A lighter breakfast today before our outing ,with a quick intermission back at the room to have the remainder of his staples removed ... Yes, a real hair wash tomorrow!! We returned to the kitchen area to finish up breakfast & headed once more to the room to chilll& catch some time on his iPod before gathering up necessary items to hit the road for pizza. Once there , Jordan & the other boy who joined us, Misielle( sorry not sure of spelling) made all the decisions of what to order , where to sit , what to get first - food or drinks-, found the restrooms, who to sit next to etc ,. All things we do so autonomously but watching " from the outside" so to speak made me realize how very much more there is to each of these processes. We ate , played some arcade games, had some dessert them cashed in their tokens, finally heading back close to 3 o clock to the hospital. Once back Jordan crashed out , I decided it seemed like a good idea & joined him , waking just before 6pm ... WHAT!?!?!? Who knew pizza could be so exhausting.... Our evening was pretty mellow, a later dinner , a bit of Americas Got Talent- Jordan particularly liked the contortionist, the 11 year old girl who sang & the artist who appeared to draw with invisible paint til throwing gold glitter on the canvas to reveal Howard Stern!!! A little face time with friends & it was time for slumber... Again I concur with Jordans choice so I shall bid you all Good Night 😊 |

Jordan's StoryFrom John, Melissa & Tara Juliano
Hello everyone, We wanted to include all of our friends in this trying time for our family. Last night, Saturday May 17th at about 5:40pm Jordan fell and received a severe head injury. All three of us heard it happen but none of us saw it. As best as we can summize Jordan was running into the bathroom and went to stop on the tile and his feet slipped out from under him which caused his head to hit very hard on the tile floor. He was responsive at first but after some questioning we realized he needed more advanced care and called 911. HFD arrived within 2 to 3 minutes and we were on our way to St. Rose after 7 total minutes from the call. It seemed painfully longer. Soon after we set of in the ambulance the Paramedic diverted out destination to Sunrise Hospital Childrens Center. If jordan had any hope of a return to the normal boy we know and love that decision was the best decision in a string of great care thet Jordan has received. On the way Jordan's condition gradually became worse. We arrived at Sunrise Hospital Trauma and they wheeled him right in with me following. I answered as many question as I could as they worked on him. They soon asked me to step out to the waiting room. Soon after that the Neurosurgon found us and gave us the situation plainly and clearly. Jordan was very sick and they needed to work aggressively to save his life. The hardest part was hearing that he might not make it through the surgery. . . .We signed te papers and walked with beside his bed to the O.R. We were all allowed tt give him a kiss and then we were walked to the waiting lounge. That was the longest and worst 3 hours of our lives. Tara had many questions and because she had been witness to all the events leading up to now we decided to talk plainly and openly as to the possible results. The Doctor finally came out and said Jordan was doing as fine as he could. His vitals were strong throughout the surgery and when she visualized his brain it looked good but that was only seeing it. there is much more within the brain. We were finally allowed back into the room and saw that Jordan was heavily sedated and was being give blood preaure meds, antibiotics, sedatives, Saline, on a ventilator to breath for him, etc. He has a long road ahead of him. We soon found out children were not allowed to stay over night so Melissa took Tara home and I stayed with Jordan for the first night. All was fine through the first night. In the morning he started to show a higher brain pressure and started to get rid of more fluid (urine) than normal. They took him for another CAT scan and when the doctor came back she was ver pleased with how it looks. We're not quite out of the woods yet, we have another hurdle to overcome. They need to take another CAT scan tomorrow (Monday) morning because the signs of a stroke do not show up until after 24 hours has passed. His reaction to stimulus is positive. When they rub his chest he responds as they feel he should. When they wiggle the IV in his arm he moves that arm slightly. He has gaged at the airtube helping him breath. These are all small but positive signs. This is where we are at currently. I will try and update this as soon as we have any new info to add. The hospital Jordan is staying in is on lower right but we are not in the system yet because we are still listed as a trauma. As soon as we get a real room and not an ICU bed I will update the info. Lastly, If you have received the invatation to this site we consider you firends who even though we may not see you all the time we think of you often. Could you please send out the biggest amount of positive thoughts and/or prayers for Jordan. I know he feels it. We sure do. Love John, Melissa, JORDAN & Tara. Help JordanPlease help us help Jordan and his family after Jordan suffered a terrible brain injury after a fall in his home.On Saturday, May 17th, Jordan Juliano suffered a terrible brain injury after an accidental fall in his home. Jordan is an amazing young man who is in great need of our community's generosity. Jordan is a competitive gymnast, terrific student, and all around amazing young man. His family is faced with the mounting medical bills associated with his treatment. Their insurance will cover some of it but not all it. Jordan will require specialized treatment at an out-of-state facility. The costs of this treatment are staggering and any help and assistance is deeply appreciated.
